Abusive parents who want to put up a good front at the expense of their families is an age old problem. Blaming it on Social Media is as stupid as blaming juvenile delinquency on comic books or video games.
Every year for Lent, I give up social media. What that means becomes harder and harder to define. Is YouTube "Social Media" when I am watching reruns of network television or Dropout videos from five years ago? Is SubStack "Social Media"? What about Patreon? Are podcasts "Social Media"? What if it is a NYT or NPR show? WTF knows?
But this year, as I deleted the meta apps, I got this overwhelming feeling that this one might by the time it actually sticks.
I agree. I have met some good people on Facebook. And I have really never seen a more wretched hive of scum and villainy than on Facebook and Twitter. It has platformed some of our worst impulses and toxic traits.
I suspect these horrible things have existed long before Zucc wanted to rate the bangability of his classmates. But now people are getting rich and famous off of abusing their families and friends. And that is just too too much.

Promoting your own writing while insulting someone else’s is a hell of a marketing tactic, I’ll give you that.

I have thought for a while in the next 5-10 years, we’re going to see a child of a family vlogger murder their parents.
