Hi. I’m Gena.

You may know me as one half of the Kill by Kill podcast, featured in both the AV Club and as one of Variety’s “10 Podcasts to Make You Scream.” You might also have read my essay “I Watched 5 Minute Crafts Videos for an Entire Weekend & Almost Lost My Mind,” which was mentioned on Vice and the 5 Minute Crafts Wikipedia page. I also occasionally say funny things on Twitter (UPDATE AS OF 7/23: I am no longer on Twitter, but you can still see the funny things I used to occasionally say there until Apartheid Clyde deletes my account).

I’ve been blogging in one form or another for over 20 years now, jumping from LiveJournal to Blogspot (several times!) to Tumblr to WordPress (twice!) to finally just buying my own domain at Squarespace. I simply haven’t been able to keep my shit together, both time management and motivation-wise, long enough to maintain any of it for more than a couple months at a time.

So why this now?

Oh, who the hell knows. At least I’m not paying for it.

I think that of all the things I enjoy writing, it’s stuff about media and pop culture I enjoy the most. I’m pretty good at it. Vincent D’Onofrio said it himself. My website (when I’ve been able to keep up with it) had become too much of a mixed bag of movie reviews, “why don’t they make the whole plane out of the black box” humorous essays, and bummer personal stuff. So I’m going to attempt to devote that just to the latter two, and this to the movie, television and pop culture writing, if for nothing else than to stay focused.

Will it work? Well, I wouldn’t go to Vegas on those odds, but we’ll see.

You’re not paying for this, but do I have to pay for it?

Not yet. The goal is to eventually offer a paid tier, but that won’t be for a while, and I don’t ever foresee me being so far up my own ass that I would make this entirely paid subscriber only. I will not charge for you to read my thoughts on that episode of The Facts of Life when Tootie goes to New York City and meets a child sex worker. That gold will always be free, baby.
